A PORTRAIT OF THE GARBAGE AS A TRASHCAN

CLEAR METAPHORS FULL HEARTS CAN'T LOSE

The Internet makes everything more extreme, and eventually to keep getting more extreme you have to ditch irony and cynicism.

And at first that seems like a good thing—John Green famously likes to point out that nerdfighters get to unapologetically like things.

But irony and cynicism are also shields, or they can be, and the lack of irony and cynicism and the accompanying self esteem issues can leave you much more vulnerable.

I’m against political correctness, and so in some ways I am against acceptance and tolerance. I am glad people hated and made fun of me. It made and makes me stronger.

It is important to be cynical and mean sometimes, I don’t care what DFW says.

Because all these cultural thrusts are leading to this world in which everybody thinks every weird thing about them has to be in the first line of their obituary. No!

I’m tired. But I guess what I am saying is…if you are a brony, please don’t admit to it in public.
